A reflection on the hymn of Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. After spending nine months unable to speak following the announcement by an angel that his elderly, barren wife would have a child, Zechariah spoke praising God for His faithfulness in keeping His promises to Israel to send a Messiah, whose coming would be proclaimed by this newborn child. The hymn, known as the Benedictus, is sung or recited as part of Morning Prayer daily by people around the world in the Liturgy of the Hours.
